Kenya vs Tanzania Safari: Which One Should You Choose?

Your best guide to East Africa's safari wonders. Unpack the diversity, cost differences, and crowd levels of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda & Rwanda safaris.

Kenya vs Tanzania Safari: Which One Should You Choose?

It's the classic East Africa safari dilemma: Kenya or Tanzania? Both countries offer world-class wildlife, iconic landscapes, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. But they're different in ways that matter.

As a Nairobi-based safari company that operates in both countries, we're going to give you our honest, ground-level perspective to help you decide.

The Quick Comparison

Choose Kenya If You Want:

  • Better value for money
  • Easier access to parks
  • Year-round excellent game viewing
  • Masai Mara conservancy exclusivity
  • Better infrastructure & road network
  • Beach extensions (Diani, Lamu)

Choose Tanzania If You Want:

  • Vast, untouched wilderness
  • Serengeti's endless plains
  • Ngorongoro Crater (unique)
  • Calving season (Jan–March)
  • More remote, "off-grid" feel
  • Zanzibar beach extension

Wildlife: What You'll See

Both countries share the same ecosystem and the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo). However:

  • Kenya's Masai Mara has one of the highest concentrations of big cats in Africa. Cheetah and leopard sightings are particularly reliable.
  • Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater is one of the few places you can see the Big Five in a single day. The black rhino population here is significant.
  • For the Great Migration river crossings, the Mara River in Kenya (July–October) offers the most dramatic viewing.
  • Tanzania's calving season (January–March) in the southern Serengeti is equally spectacular but less well-known.

Cost Comparison

Tanzania is generally 20–40% more expensive than Kenya for a comparable safari. Why?

  • Tanzanian park fees are higher ($70–80/day vs Kenya's $60–80)
  • Tanzania requires a more expensive single-entry visa or e-visa
  • Longer driving distances between parks in Tanzania
  • Kenya has more competition among operators, driving prices down

💡A 7-day mid-range safari in Kenya typically costs $2,500–3,500 per person. The same quality in Tanzania: $3,500–5,000.

Our Recommendation

For first-time safari-goers, we almost always recommend starting with Kenya. Here's why:

  • Nairobi is a major international hub with more direct flights
  • Shorter driving distances between parks
  • Better value — you get more wildlife per dollar
  • Private conservancies offer exclusive experiences
  • You can always add Tanzania on a future trip

That said, if you have 10+ days and a larger budget, a combined Kenya–Tanzania safari gives you the best of both worlds.

We almost booked Tanzania because of the Serengeti hype, but Samton Safaris convinced us to try Kenya first. We saw 4 of the Big 5 on day one in the Mara. Absolutely no regrets.
