About Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most extraordinary natural wonders. This 260-square-kilometre caldera floor, enclosed by 600-metre walls, creates a self-contained ecosystem supporting around 25,000 large animals.

It is one of the few places in Tanzania where you can see the Big Five in a single day. The crater's soda lake attracts flamingos, and the dense populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, and the critically endangered black rhino make every game drive unforgettable.

DRY SEASONSHOULDER SEASONRAINY SEASON

Dry Season

The short dry season brings clear skies and excellent game viewing. Vegetation thins out, concentrating wildlife around remaining water sources. This is one of the best months for photography with golden-hour light across the savanna.

Common Questions

FAQs — Ngorongoro Crater

A full-day crater descent is sufficient, but we recommend staying at a crater-rim lodge for sunset views and a dawn descent when wildlife is most active.
