Planning a Family Safari in Kenya: Ages, Activities & Tips

A Kenya safari is one of the most magical family holidays you can take. Watching your children's faces light up as they see their first wild elephant, giraffe, or lion is an experience that creates lifelong memories.

But it does require some planning. Here's our complete guide to making it work.

What Age Can Children Go on Safari?

There's no single answer — it depends on the type of safari:

  • Private vehicle safaris: Suitable from age 4+. Your guide can adapt the pace to shorter game drives.
  • Shared/group safaris: Most operators require children to be 7+
  • Walking safaris: Usually 12+ (or 16+ in some conservancies)
  • Fly-in safaris: No age limit, but check individual camp policies

💡We always recommend a private vehicle for families with children under 10. It lets you set your own pace, take toilet breaks, and return to the lodge early if kids get tired.

Family-Friendly Activities

  • Game drives — the classic experience; morning drives are best for active wildlife
  • Giraffe Centre, Nairobi — feed endangered Rothschild's giraffes by hand
  • David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage — visit rescued baby elephants (morning only)
  • Maasai village visits — children love meeting Maasai children and learning about warrior culture
  • Nature walks — guided bush walks in conservancies (age-appropriate)
  • Beach time — combine your safari with Diani Beach or Zanzibar for swimming and snorkelling

Sample Family Itinerary: 8 Days

Day 1: Arrive Nairobi — Giraffe Centre + Elephant Orphanage

Days 2–3: Amboseli (elephants + Kilimanjaro views)

Day 4: Drive to Masai Mara via the Great Rift Valley

Days 5–6: Masai Mara game drives + Maasai village visit

Day 7: Fly to Diani Beach — relax, swim, snorkel

Day 8: Beach morning, fly to Nairobi for departure

From $3,200 per adult, $2,400 per child (5–11)

Health & Safety for Kids

  • Malaria prevention: Consult your family doctor about antimalarials suitable for children
  • Sun protection: High-factor sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are essential
  • Hydration: Carry water bottles on every game drive
  • Vaccinations: Check requirements with your GP 6–8 weeks before travel
  • Travel insurance: Absolutely essential — ensure it covers safari activities

Our kids (aged 6 and 9) still talk about Kenya every day. The elephants at Amboseli, the balloon safari in the Mara, the beach in Diani — it was the perfect family trip. Samuel made everything so easy.
