Plains Zebra

Equus quagga

Dive into an intimate encounter with the Plains Zebra migration across East Africa's vast landscapes. Tailored safaris with expert guides by Samton Safaris.

About the Plains Zebra

The plains zebra is one of the most recognisable animals in Africa, instantly identified by its distinctive black and white stripes. Scientists now believe these stripes serve multiple purposes: confusing predators during a chase, regulating body temperature, and deterring biting flies.

Zebras are a key part of the Great Migration, with over 200,000 travelling alongside the wildebeest herds. They play an important ecological role as "pioneer grazers" — eating the tough top layer of grass that wildebeest cannot reach, making it easier for the wildebeest to feed on the shorter grasses beneath.

Fun Facts
