Giraffa camelopardalis
Witness the iconic giraffe in its native East Africa habitat on an exclusive Samton Safari. Expert guided tours in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda.
The giraffe is the world's tallest animal, with males reaching heights of up to 5.7 metres. These elegant creatures are a quintessential symbol of the African savanna and one of the most photographed animals on safari.
East Africa is home to several giraffe subspecies, including the Masai giraffe (darker, irregular patches) in Kenya and Tanzania, and the Rothschild's giraffe (lighter, more defined patches) in Uganda. Each giraffe's pattern is unique, like a human fingerprint.
Despite their long necks, giraffes have only seven vertebrae — the same number as humans. Their necks can weigh up to 270 kg and their hearts must pump blood over 2 metres straight up to reach their brains.
A giraffe's heart weighs about 11 kg and is 60 cm long
They only need 5–30 minutes of sleep per day
No two giraffes have the same pattern — each is unique
