Chameleon

Chamaeleo spp.

Uncover the mystique of East Africa as you embark on a specialized chameleon safari with Samton Safaris. Discover unique species and experience chameleons in their natural habitat.

About the Chameleon

East Africa is home to a remarkable diversity of chameleon species, from tiny pygmy chameleons to the large three-horned Jackson's chameleon found in Kenya's highland forests. Contrary to popular belief, chameleons change colour primarily for communication and temperature regulation rather than camouflage.

Their eyes can rotate independently, giving them a nearly 360-degree field of vision. Their ballistic tongues can extend to twice their body length in just 0.07 seconds — faster than a fighter jet.

Fun Facts

1

Their tongue can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 1/100th of a second

2

Each eye can rotate independently, giving 360-degree vision

3

Colour changes are mainly for communication, not camouflage

4

The smallest chameleon species is just 29 mm long
