African Wild Elephant Shrew

Rhynchocyon petersi

Join Samton Safaris on a captivating safari in Kenya to spot the elusive Elephant Shrew amidst East Africa's breathtaking wildlife.

About the African Wild Elephant Shrew

The black and rufous elephant shrew (also called sengi) is one of Africa's most unusual small mammals. Despite their name and mouse-like appearance, they are actually more closely related to elephants, aardvarks, and manatees than to actual shrews.

Found in the coastal forests of Kenya and Tanzania, these quick little creatures are rarely seen on safari but are a fascinating example of East Africa's incredible biodiversity.

Fun Facts

1

They are more closely related to elephants than to actual shrews

2

Elephant shrews can run at up to 28 km/h

3

They maintain a network of cleared trails through the forest floor for quick escapes

4
