The Ultimate Guide to the Great Migration

What is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is the annual movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra, and 200,000 gazelle across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It is the largest terrestrial mammal migration on Earth and one of the most spectacular natural events you can witness.

When Does It Happen?

The migration is a year-round event. The herds are constantly moving in a clockwise circuit between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, driven by rainfall and grazing patterns.

  • January-March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti
  • April-June: Herds move northwest through the western corridor
  • July-October: Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara
  • November-December: Herds return south towards the Serengeti

Best Viewing Tips

Book your safari during July-October for the dramatic river crossings. Stay in mobile camps that follow the herds. Allow at least 3-4 days in the migration area for the best chances of witnessing a crossing.
