Samburu Game Reserve

Samburu is considered a gem among discerning safari goers because it is relatively uncrowded. Unlike Amboseli, it attracts few self-driving visitors over weekends or during school holidays, it also never reaches the fever pitch of the Masai Mara during the Migration, when thousands arrive to view the spectacle (that is why we prefer to stay in private conservancies in the Mara). You may have to work harder to find sightings but, when you do, the reward is that much sweeter and you’re likely to have few other vehicles around you. The big cats are found here as are unusual species like gerenuk. The serene, off-the-beaten-track Samburu National Reserve is situated in the center of Kenya, about 300km north of Nairobi. It is adjacent to Buffalo Springs National Reserve and the Shaba National Reserve is also only a stone's throw away. The reserve consists of a mix of wood and grassland with riverine forest and swamp which is a haven for elephants and leopards in particular.

Striking volcanic mountains backdrop the park, and scattered across Samburu's semi-arid plains between the red dust and shrubbery are large granite rocky outcrops, tall acacias, and deep craters. Meandering through the heart of the park is the Ewaso Nyiro River. A green oasis of large doum palms and lush vegetation line the banks, breaking from the otherwise arid ecosystem and is a vital haven for wildlife.

Best Time to Visit

Samburu is a year-round safari destination, but wildlife viewing is usually best in the dry months from June to October and December to March.

Because of the dry season, the animals tend to congregate along the Ewaso River to drink and eat and it’s easier to spot them. It’s best to avoid the reserve during the wet season (November, April, and May) as the high grass will make animal spotting very challenging. However, If you are a bird lover, then the wet season is perfect to enjoy bird watching as many migratory birds come here during this season.

Wildlife

There is a diverse collection of Animals in Samburu and the reserve is much valued for its abundance of the Samburu Special Five which includes the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and the beisa oryx, which are unique to this area of Kenya and can only be spotted in Samburu Reserve.

The section below consists of a categorized list of the wildlife of Mammals, including what is commonly referred to as the Big Five ( Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard & African Buffalo ) Only the rhino is absent from the Big Five and the Big Nine Animals to further include Cheetah, Giraffe, Zebra & Hippo. There is a rich diversity of Birds commonly found in Samburu Reserve and we have listed these below as well.
